“MOBILE PRINTMAKING PROJECT”
SENI GRAFIS MENJADI MENARIK DIKARENAKAN KEMUNGKINAN-KEMUNGKINAN YANG DAPAT DICAPAI OLEH MEDIA INI. ADA KETEGANGAN TERSENDIRI KETIKA BERMAIN DI WILAYAH KONVENSI MAUPUN KETIKA LEPAS KELUAR WILAYAH TERSEBUT – YANG MANA PILIHANNYA BISA SANGAT VARIATIF KARENA SETIAP KASUS AKAN BERBEDA PENANGANAN DAN EKSEKUSINYA. SERINGKALI PROSES MENJADI SANGAT DOMINAN NAMUN DISISI LAIN PENCAPAIAN HASIL AKHIR TETAP MEMBUTUHKAN PERHATIAN EKSTRA.
SETELAH BERKUTAT DENGAN PERSOALAN TEKNIS YANG RASANYA TAK AKAN HABIS-HABISNYA KARENA SELALU ADA METODE DAN PENEMUAN BARU DARI MASING-MASING SENIMAN, KINI SAATNYA MEMBAWA PROSES SENI GRAFIS MEMASUKI WILAYAH “PERFORMANCE ART”. SENI INI HARUS CUKUP MENGHIBUR, BERMAIN-MAIN, BERINTERAKSI DENGAN SEBANYAK MUNGKIN PUBLIKNYA DAN MELAKUKAN KOLABORASI DENGAN BERBAGAI MEDIA. PILIHANNYA ADALAH MENINGGALKAN KONSEP STUDIO YANG STATIS ATAU DIAM DITEMPAT. DALAM PROYEK INI SENIMAN MENGHAMPIRI PENONTON, MENDATANGI RUANG-RUANG PRIVAT/RUANG-RUANG PUBLIK PARA PENIKMAT SENI DAN MELAKUKAN PROSES SECARA LANGSUNG DIHADAPAN MEREKA. The “Mobile Printmaking” project (previously titled “Moving Woodcuts” then "Mobile Woodcuts") is intended to build links among a group of people who happen to be united in particular activity within a limited period of time, using woodcut as a medium.
This project was start in the second week of my residency at the Vermont Studio Center (VSC), Johson, Vermont, USA (February 27 – April 22, 2011) and complete 6 weeks later. The main subject are my fellow residents whom I met in amonth of creative activity on campus VSC.
Woodcut is a medium which is always exiting to explore, not only in term of the themes but also in terms of way to carry out the process. As a medium of printmaking, each stage of the process: from preparing the plate, to printing, to signing the prints and selecting them for public exhibition, is a precious moment to be felt and enjoyed. I also invited the people involved in this project to enjoy the different stages of the working process along side me.
To stimulate and enhance the personal experience of this project, I bought my equipment to the studio of each artist and cut the images of their faces directly on the block of wood in front of them (carving on the spot). In addition to printing on paper and fabrics, I also made photos and videos to add depth to the material of the project it self. The aims is to know each other better and build friendships.
“Mobile Printmaking” is an ongoing project. It can be carried out in new location and in different circumstances.
